After a “catastrophic” start to the year, the prefect strengthens road sanctions

ROAD SAFETY – Too “lax”, Ille-et-Vilaine will align its scale with the other Breton departments

The toll had improved last year with 42 road deaths, compared to 45 in 2022 and 49 on average over the period 2016-2019. But since the beginning of 2024, the figures have been very bad on the roads of Ille-et-Vilaine where 30 people have already lost their lives, compared to 24 during the same period last year. “It’s catastrophic,” says Philippe Gustin, prefect of Ille-et-Vilaine.

In the department, the number of accidents has nevertheless fallen by 15% since the beginning of the year and the number of injured by 13%. But unfortunately we are seeing more deaths in road accidents, particularly many vulnerable users such as motorized two-wheelers, bicycles, scooters or pedestrians. In Rennes, the five people killed since the beginning of the year were all traveling on foot.

A scale aligned with other Breton departments

Faced with these poor figures, the prefect decided to tighten the screws and toughen the scale of certain traffic offences, which differ from one department to another. “Ille-et-Vilaine was the most lax department in Brittany and I don’t like being lax,” underlines Philippe Gustin, who will sign a decree in the coming days.
