Nicolas Sarkozy requests additional information

Nicolas Sarkozy’s lawyers will ask the courts this Thursday, September 5, for additional information in the so-called Libyan financing case of his 2007 presidential campaign, BFMTV learned from concordant sources, confirming information from RTL.

The investigation lasted more than ten years (January 5, 2013 – August 24, 2023) and the trial is due to begin on January 6, but the former head of state believes that not all investigations have been carried out on the subject. His lawyers therefore intend to file, this afternoon, during a hearing to fix the date, a request for additional information.

Lawyers believe documents could exonerate Sarkozy

In the sixteen pages of conclusions that BFMTV was able to consult, Nicolas Sarkozy’s lawyers indicate that they discovered “in a parallel legal procedure” documents that could exonerate their client.

These documents, which come in particular from the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI), cast doubt on the veracity of the “Libyan note”, a document which suggests that Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya did indeed give its agreement to finance Nicolas Sarkozy’s campaign in 2007.

Further investigations requested

Validated several times by the courts and considered a “fake” by the Sarkozy camp since the beginning of this affair, this “Libyan note” is often presented as the “genesis of the whole affair”, write the lawyers of the former President of the Republic in their conclusions. They are therefore asking the courts to conduct additional investigations, in particular by demanding the declassification of all secret service documents relating to this famous note.

This subject should therefore animate the fixation hearing scheduled for this Thursday afternoon. Technical, this hearing should validate the organization of the trial which should open on January 6 and last four months, at the rate of three afternoons per week.

Charged with “concealment of embezzlement of public funds”, “passive corruption”, “illegal financing of an electoral campaign” and “criminal association”, Nicolas Sarkozy is to be tried with twelve other people. He risks a sentence of up to ten years in prison in this case.
