From the age of 60, alcohol consumption is harmful even in small doses

Study – Risks identified in over 60s regardless of daily alcohol consumption

The French, especially the younger ones, are drinking less and less alcohol. According to a study published in January 2024 by Santé publique France, 61.8% and 34.1% of men and women aged 65-75 still drank alcohol every week in 2021, compared to only 36.9% and 21.4% of men and women aged 18-24 and 46.7% and 24.7% for those aged 25-34.

The fact remains that according to a study published on August 12 in the journal JAMA Network Open, any alcohol consumption, even moderate, is harmful to the health of those over 60, as reported by CNN.

Biases to avoid

To reach this result, these researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid studied the medical data of more than 135,000 adults aged 60, mostly white, as detailed in the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010. They include self-administered questionnaires on their alcohol consumption. This made it possible to determine whether they were only occasional drinkers (less than 20 grams of alcohol per week), or drinkers consuming a low, moderate or high quantity of alcohol daily.
