High school girl’s murder solved 30 years later thanks to DNA

Man in custody, more than 30 years after rape followed by murder. As reported by NBC News on Tuesday, September 3, a man residing in the state of Missouri in the United States was arrested on August 20 for the murder of Carmen Van Huss, a young woman aged 19 at the time of the events in 1993.

To find the suspect more than 30 years after the incident, investigators used genetic genealogy, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a press release.

This is a technique that uses DNA evidence. This data is compared and attempts are made to identify the proximity of this genetic heritage with those present in public DNA banks. For example, a man identified thanks to the presence of very similar data from his brother or sister.

According to the American press, the 19-year-old woman was found dead in her Indianapolis apartment. At a press conference, Carmen Van Huss’ brother said the victim was only a freshman at the time of her rape and murder.

As for the suspect, Dana Shepard, 52, he was taken into custody in Missouri. However, the Indiana sheriff is requesting that he be sent to that state, where the events took place. While in custody, the man declined to comment on the case.
