This is not the announcement that everyone was expecting: while speculation about the next Prime Minister had been rampant since the beginning of the week, Edouard Philippe, the mayor of Le Havre and president of the Horizon party, chose this moment to announce his candidacy for the presidential election. A snub to the master of clocks, the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron, who has been keeping the suspense going for 58 days about the future occupant of Matignon.
“I will be a candidate in the next presidential election”: former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe made his candidacy official in an interview with the weekly Le Point published Tuesday evening.
“What I will propose will be massive”
“I am preparing to propose things to the French. What I will propose will be massive. The French will decide,” explains the president of the Horizons party, Emmanuel Macron’s Prime Minister. Macron from 2017 to 2020.
Asked about Matignon and the Xavier Bertrand and Bernard Cazeneuve hypotheses, the mayor of Le Havre replied that he would support “any Prime Minister chosen in a political space that goes from the conservative right to social democracy”. In June, the former Prime Minister had strongly criticized the decision to dissolve the National Assembly. “Macron killed the presidential majority”, he had asserted.
Although he created a surprise by choosing this moment, this announcement is not really a surprise: the former Prime Minister has been preparing for the 2027 deadline for a long time. For two years, he has been crisscrossing the country, holding numerous meetings. “In less than two years, Horizons has become the third political force in the majority, it has a group of 28 deputies in the Assembly, a group leader in the Senate, 500 mayors, thousands of local elected officials and 20,000 paying members,” boasts Horizons’ “elections” manager, Pierre-Yves Bournazel.
