The resigning Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, expressed on Tuesday from Boulogne-sur-Mer his wish to “reestablish a classic migratory relationship with our friend and neighbour” the United Kingdom after the sinking of a migrant boat in the Channel.

During his speech, he recalled that France has been calling for “a migration treaty between Great Britain and the European Union” for two years, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, elected in July, had pledged shortly afterwards to “give new impetus” to the relationship between London and Paris.

Not enough resources to deter migrants

The Minister of the Interior also specified that the victims of this shipwreck were probably “people from the Horn of Africa”. He stressed that these migrants undertake this dangerous crossing to the English coast for various reasons, including “to join a family, to work there sometimes in conditions that are not acceptable in France”.
