French audiovisual still driven by exported fiction

Fiction, for the second consecutive year, keeps French audiovisual programs in good health for export, indicate the National Center for Cinema and the Animated Image (CNC) and Unifrance on Tuesday. In 2023, the level of export remains “raised to reach 203.4 million euros (-5.3% compared to 2022)”reveals the annual study by the CNC and Unifrance, the organization responsible for promoting French cinema and audiovisual internationally.

These sales “exceed the threshold of 200 million euros for the 3rd time in 30 years (previously in 2017 with 205.2 million euros and in 2022, a record year with 214.8 million euros)”. The situation is however «difficile» between “decrease in acquisition budgets and contraction in the North American market in particular”.

And so the fiction remains “the leading export genre, for the second consecutive year, with 36.6% of total sales”or 74.5 million euros in sales (best year after 2022, -7.7%) and a turnover “well above the average of the last ten years (54.9 million euros)”. Among the gondola heads, CNC and Unifrance cite “HPI”, “Marie Antoinette”, «Bardot», «B.R.I», “Criminal Tropics” or even “Astrid and Raphaëlle”.

Animation sales drop again

Animation sales – still “the 2nd genre in export with 25.2% market share” – know on the other hand “a further decrease and stand at 51.2 million euros in 2023 (-11.2% compared to 2022)”. A situation which can be explained in particular “by a drop in sales in North America (-69.7%, to 4.3 million euros)”.

The documentary continues on its side “its very good dynamic” to reach 47.2 million euros (-3.0% compared to 2022, a record year)”. The annual study mentions “hybrid works mixing several genres such as science and history”with hits like “Iznik: The Mysteries of the Sunken Basilica” or even “The Battle of Cobalt”.

The geographical distribution of sales of French programs is “roughly the same as in 2022” : Western Europe “regains market share to represent 46.8% of global revenues (+6.1 points over one year) and remains the leading region for purchasing these programs, at 95.1 million euros”North America comes second with €22.3 million and a market share of 10.9%, followed by the Asia/Oceania region at €14 million (6.9% market share).
