Another millionaire win in the Swiss Loto draw

In order to continue the work on the 3rd correction of the Rhône, the Valais State Council is submitting two commitment credits to the Grand Council. One, of 113 million francs, is to be used to the anticipated measure (AM) Iles des Clous. The other, of 29 million francs, is intended for that of Massongex-Bex Rhône, excluding the hydroelectric level.

These two MAs have been detached from the priority measure (MP) of Chablais, to which they were initially attached. This separation aims to allow rapid completion of security work, the canton indicated in a press release on Wednesday.

The total amount of 142 million francs must be used to finance the entire expenditure of these two measures, until their complete implementation. “Taking into account the expected contributions (federal, Vaudois and communal), the net share of the canton for these two projects, spanning the cantons of Vaud and Valais, will amount to 27.4 million francs”, the canton emphasizes.

These two measures were analyzed as part of the revision of the 3rd Rhône correction project decided by the Valais State Council in May 2024. The latter emphasizes that “this evaluation showed that they required few modifications due to this revision”.

Development and security

The anticipated Iles des Clous measure aims to develop the banks of the Rhône over 4.2 km, between upstream of the mouth of the Grand Eau (not included) and near the village of Chessel (VD). The construction of a new dike on the Vaud side and the reinforcement of the dike on the Valais side will provide lasting security for the municipalities of Vouvry (VS) and Yvorne (VD), the press release details.

In addition, a major widening of the Rhone will be carried out on a 2 km stretch located in an alluvial area of national importance. This work is a first step in meeting the objectives of flood protection in the Chablais plain. The measure also includes developments in favor of biodiversity and soft mobility.

The Massongex-Bex Rhône anticipated measure extends over the territory of the municipalities of Massongex (VS), St-Maurice (VS) and Bex (VD), from the mouth of the Courset to downstream of the mouth of the Avançon. It concerns the development of approximately 6.4 km of banks aimed at eliminating the risk of dam failure, strengthening the banks with renaturation objectives.

Furthermore, the current pedestrian-cyclist bridge between Massongex and Bex will be moved and a new bridge will be built in its place, allowing the passage of public transport, also notes the Council of State.
