The Americans are too bad to make good sorbets and do without ours despite the tariffs, believes the company Top Glaciers, which still wants to be less dependent on its exports south of the border.
“The sorbets they make are not edible! When you compare them with our products, you say: ‘Yeah, it’s not the same thing,’” boasts Pierre Morin, one of the bosses of the company located north of Montreal.
Since the announcement of Trump’s tariffs, Top Glaciers, which produces six brands including Bilboquet, has been discussing solutions with its American customers so that they can continue to buy its products.
“If we are asked to make a certain sacrifice to counterbalance the 25%, we are ready to go a long way, but the American customer will also have to go a long way, and perhaps the consumer too,” maintains Pierre Morin. .
The SME with more than a hundred employees operates a “marginal” market in the United States, but which is still enormous on a Quebec scale: that of frozen desserts without dairy products.
-“Americans are sitting pretty on their milk and cream. There are not many in our sector,” underlines Mr. Morin.
The company which sends 55% of its exports to the United States still takes the opportunity to export more elsewhere, including Mexico and Panama.
“It gives us a push to say: ‘We have to look at other markets and that’s a very good thing,’” concludes Pierre Morin.
