Switzerland: Daily Bread bans cash

Le Pain Daily bakery-restaurants no longer accept cash payments. RTS reports that the chain, mainly established in Geneva, but which also has stores in Lausanne and Zurich, made this decision in December. She did not respond to questions from the national media but, according to the latter, several reasons explain her choice: to avoid staff having to checkout, to reduce the risk of scams and the health risk. A robbery would also have weighed in the balance.

Refusing cash payments is legal, the State of Geneva has confirmed. On the other hand, this practice goes rather against the position of small merchants, since when paying by card, commissions charged by intermediaries escape them.
