“I almost never drink”: why generation Z is a fan of non-alcoholic drinks

According to a 2023 study by the Sowine/Dynata 2023 barometer, among French people who say they do not consume alcohol, 23% are between 18 and 25 years old. Generation Z consumes less alcohol than its elders, particularly baby boomers. Among these young people born between 1995 and 2010, the tendency would rather be towards control, moderation, or even abstinence.

“I don’t like the taste of alcohol”

“Dry January is a has-been for my generation confides Mina, 29 years old. I almost never drink. This can happen to me on special occasions and to toast with my parents. But honestly I don't like the taste of alcohol, especially wine.”

It is therefore this generation which is turning to other types of non-alcoholic drinks. “And not necessarily substitutes that seek to imitate the taste of alcohol,” says Marie, 25 years old.

Healthier drinks

Among the non-alcoholic drinks that are popular among these young people, so-called functional drinks which are supposed to provide additional health benefits due to bioactive components which can come from a plant, animal, marine or micro-organism source.

At 29 years old, Mina is a true fan of these drinks: “They are generally prepared from vegetables or fruits, will be enriched with minerals, vitamins, amino acids, sometimes even with plant or fruit extracts. They have benefits on stress and fatigue.”
