at 38, Gaël Monfils impresses

At 38 years old, Gaël Monfils overthrows, for the first time since 2008, one of the five best players in the world: Taylor Fritz. The Frenchman, 41st player in the world, crushed his opponent in 3 rounds. He wins after more than three hours of play. “I did it! I believe strongly in myself. I truly believe that I can still hurt” he enthuses as he qualifies for the round of 16 of the Australian Open.

One more victory for the man who dreamed of being champion from a very young age. Very early on, he was spotted for his impressive playing power. Then, he had a series of successes, notably winning Roland Garros Junior in 2004. He then faced the greatest for years: Federer, Nadal… Everyone praised his game and his sense of spectacle, like Djokovic again recently. Return to the Australian Open the day after tomorrow for the round of 16 where Monfils will try to prove once again that victories are not reserved for youth.
