These subscribers will see their electricity bill explode from February, are you concerned?

In February, the French will see a change in their electricity bills. With the increase in certain taxes and fees, but also the reduction in the regulated electricity sales tariff (TRVE), everyone will be impacted differently depending on their type of subscription. It is important to understand these developments in order to anticipate your energy costs.

Who will pay more?

If you have not subscribed to the regulated sales price (TRV), prepare for an increase in your bill. The reason? The increase in certain taxes and fees, notably the excise on electricity, formerly called TICFE. During the energy crisis, this tax was reduced to one euro per MWh thanks to the price shield put in place by the government. But from February 2024, it goes back to 21 euros per MWh and could reach 33.70 euros per MWh the following month. For someone who consumes 8,500 KWh per year, that's approximately 108 euros more every year.

And that's not all! THE Tariff for using public electricity networks (TURPE), used to finance network maintenance by managers like Enedis, will also increase. This price represents between 20 % et 30 % of your total electricity bill. From next month, it climbs 7,7 %. For example, if your annual bill is 1 800 eurosand TURPE represents 20% of the total, expect an increase of around 27 euros. If it is more like 30%, the increase exceeds the 40 euros.

Good news for some

But rest assured, not everyone will see their bill explode! Those who benefit from the TRVE or have an offer indexed to it will see their rating drop thanks to the reduction integrated into the calculation of the TRVE from February. This reduction is made possible thanks to the reduction in prices on the wholesale electricity markets. According to the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) and the government, this should reduce the charges for TRV customers by approximately 14 %.

Is your contract still advantageous?

For those with a fixed price offer or one based on fluctuations in the wholesale market, it may be different: they could see their bill increase with the increases mentioned above. It is therefore really important for every consumer to take a close look at their current contract and perhaps consider a change.

Fortunately, there are tools to help you with this process! The National Energy Ombudsman website offers a simulation to compare your current offer with those available on the market. This can be super useful for finding the best possible option in the face of ongoing changes.

These variations in electricity prices clearly show that even in a given sector like this, we are not all in the same boat with the pricing policies put in place. Therefore, it is better to be informed and proactive regarding your energy choices to not only optimize your expenses but also participate in national efforts aimed at stabilizing our energy system in the face of current and future challenges.
