Swiss Steel employees speak to owner Martin Haefner – Unia, the union

Despite offers of state support, Steeltec, the subsidiary of Swiss Steel, wants to cut 130 jobs in its Emmenbrücke steelworks and lay off 50 employees. Workers, who fought to gain public support for the steel plant, are not ready to accept this. In an open letter, they address the majority shareholder Martin Haefner and request a meeting.

The frustration of Steeltec employees in Emmenbrücke is great. The proposals of the personnel committee, trade unions and employee associations during the consultation procedure were left aside. Instead of applying the current social plan, which provides for early retirement as the main measure, the company wants to impose its restructuring through a large number of layoffs.

Employees speak to owner Martin Haefner

At today’s staff meeting, Steeltec workers approved and signed an open letter to majority shareholder Martin Haefner. They clearly explain that restructuring can and must be done without a single layoff. The staff demands that Haefner intervene with management to prevent the layoffs. In addition, he must ensure that Swiss Steel quickly submits an application to benefit from the reduction in electricity network usage taxes put in place by the politicians. The employees invite Haefner to an urgent meeting at the steelworks to explain the reasons for their position.

Securing the future of the Emmenbrücke steelworks

For the workers, it is not only a question of their jobs, but also of the future of the Emmenbrücke steelworks. “The attitude of management, which immediately excludes the possibility of early retirement and carries out a large number of layoffs, suggests that the Emmenbrücke production site is threatened in the medium term,” write the employees in their letter. The last few weeks have shown that workers are of decisive importance for the future of the factory. Their mobilization was indeed decisive: it led to an outpouring of sympathy from the population and the rapid decision of federal policy to support the steelworks.
