TikTok's bold strategy to save itself in the United States

A radical stop rather than a slow death. Four days before the deadline set by the American authorities for TikTok to cut its ties with the Chinese tech giant ByteDance, the video social network is reportedly considering a very daring strategy to better save itself.

According to the bipartisan law passed by Congress, TikTok has until Sunday to sell its American assets to a company in the country, in the name of protecting national security. Once this deadline passes, app stores will be instructed to remove TikTok from their database. This means that it will become impossible to install the service on a new connected device. Americans who already have TikTok on their phone will therefore be able to continue using it once the deadline has passed. But they will no longer be able to benefit from application updates. This will lead their version of TikTok to become obsolete, then technically unusable, in many months. A slow agony which could therefore go a little unnoticed in the eyes of the general public… and become secondary in the eyes of politicians.
