Tax American orange juice. Why not apples?

Trump will be in office in less than a week. The threat of tariffs keeps us on our toes. To fight back or not?

On the list of American products to be taxed could be found, among others, orange juice from Florida. The symbol is strong. The very emblem of Trump’s place of residence.

But orange fields are not common in our countryside.

As long as we want to hurt, why not do better by giving impetus to the Canadian and preferably Quebec economy?

Let’s first tax what we are able to produce at home, at least in terms of foodstuffs.

A tariff response as a weapon of massive development

At home, we have supplies from the garden to last for months to come. It may be January, but toffer harvesting from one season to the next, we’ve been doing this for generations.

However, on grocery store shelves, fruits and vegetables from Quebec, or even Canada, are very difficult to find. This is not normal.

It’s crazy to be around market gardeners who are struggling to pay themselves a salary and to see American apples and carrots in the supermarket or in our institutions. Let’s remember the Chinese compotes served in our hospitals…

The share of foreign vegetables that monopolizes our market amounts to tens of billions of dollars. Let’s imagine for a moment the impact in all regions of Quebec if we cultivated them here. An opportunity for rurality which is struggling and which is falling fallow again.

Eating is voting

Canada can tax more made in USA. But taking the population hostage by making them pay more for their glass of sunshine in January is not sustainable.

Quebec should also invest in agricultural policies and infrastructure that will considerably increase the presence of our local products on grocery shelves. Eating is a political gesture.

And right now, I don’t really want to vote American, but what choice do we have?
