Electric car news
The Korean manufacturer Hyundai is hitting hard by announcing the imminent launch of its pilot production line for solid electrolyte batteries. This avant-garde technology could redefine the standards of the electric automobile industry with performances never before achieved.
The solid-state battery: a major technological advance
Solid-state batteries represent a radical innovation in the field of energy storage. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries using a liquid electrolyte, these new batteries incorporate a solid material as an ionic conductor. This fundamental characteristic brings considerable advantages:
- Energy density up to 450 Wh/kgallowing theoretical autonomy of more than 1000 kilometers
- Almost zero risk of fire thanks to the absence of flammable liquid components
- Ultra-fast charging with 80% capacity in less than 15 minutes
- Increased lifespan exceeding 1500 cycles de charge
Hyundai’s ambitious schedule
The next-generation battery research center, located at the Uiwang Institute in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, is currently finalizing preparations. The pilot production line will start in January 2025with the aim of equipping the first vehicles by the end of the same year. Mass production is planned for 2030marking the start of a new era for Hyundai electric vehicles.
A global technology race
The development of solid-state batteries mobilizes the biggest players in the automotive industry. Factorial Energy, supported by Mercedes, is already announcing 40Ah ready for marketing. Honda is also launching its demonstration line in January 2025. Chinese giant CATL plans small-scale production as early as 2027.
Builder | Production target | Key Features |
---|---|---|
Hyundai | 2025 (pilot) / 2030 (mass) | Rapid integration on vehicles |
Honda | 2025 (demo) | Focus on security |
CATL | 2027 | Production 20Ah en test |
Applications beyond automotive
The impact of this technology goes beyond the automotive sector. The Chinese manufacturer EHang has carried out the first test flight of an unmanned electric flying taxi powered by a solid-state battery. This demonstration paves the way for applications in electric aviation, wearable devices and stationary energy storage.
-Hyundai’s massive commitment to this technology marks a turning point. The first prototypes integrated into the test vehicles will make it possible to evaluate real-world performance and optimize the technology for everyday use. Motorists can hope for more efficient, safer electric vehicles with a range comparable to current thermal cars.
