Taiwanese shipping giant Evergreen has once again announced a huge year-end bonus to its employees. Information that had escaped us a little in the madness of the holidays. in fact, according to Taiwanese media, employees will receive an average of 20 months of salary as a bonus.

In 2023, the average salary at Evergreen was around NT$60,000 (around 1,700 francs), according to local media. Therefore, the bonus for employees would be around 35,000 francs. Evergreen is known for its generous bonuses, in 2021 employees received up to 40 months of salary, and the following year, up to 52.

The company recorded a net profit after tax of around five billion francs in the first three quarters of 2024, an increase of 239.4% compared to 2023.

These profits are expected to continue to increase due to global factors, such as the crisis in the Middle East. Since October 2023, Yemen’s Houthi militias have increasingly fired missiles at merchant ships in the Red Sea. Ships therefore have to be diverted, leading to increased costs that Evergreen charges its customers.

The company known not only for its generosity

The group made international headlines a few years ago when one of its ships blocked an important trade route.

On March 23, 2021, the container ship Ever Given ran aground in the Suez Canal and blocked it for several days. A damage which had caused major traffic jams and delays in world trade. It was not until March 29 that the ship was able to be refloated.

On March 13, 2022, the Ever Forward ran aground in the American Chesapeake Bay, near Baltimore. It was stuck there for more than a month and had to be freed using dredging, towing and finally unloading some of the containers.
