(Agence Ecofin) – This is a good performance for Gabon’s extractive industry, which is coming out of two consecutive quarters of decline. Nevertheless, the country’s authorities are taking measures to diversify the national economy and make it less dependent on these sectors, particularly the oil sector.
The Gabonese Ministry of Economy recently revealed that production in the national extractive sectors increased by 3.5% in 3e quarter 2024, notably driven by the manganese, marketed natural gas and oil segments.
Oil production showed an increase of 3.1%, after the difficulties encountered in the previous quarter, in particular operational incidents and the accident with loss of life on the Becuna site operated by the Franco-British Perenco. The resumption of production on 3e quarter is explained by better yield from mature fields and the start of production of new wells.
For manganese, production increased by 4.5% thanks to the performance of COMILOG (Compagnie miniere de l’Ogooué), a subsidiary of the French Eramet, which extracted 2 million tonnes over the period. The production of marketed natural gas increased by 3.7%, after technical problems linked to the upgrading of gas transport infrastructure.
Gabon hopes to maintain this positive momentum and achieve even higher yields in the months to come.
