The appointment of Christophe Castaner as CSR advisor to the fast-fashion group Shein is causing debate. Attacked, the former walker sees it as an extension of his consulting activities.
Announced in December, the appointment of the former Minister of the Interior to a regional CSR committee at Shein caused a lot of ink to flow. The choice of Christophe Castaner as independent member was justified by the company for “his extensive experience in public administration, governance and strategic planning, as well as for his knowledge of the territory”.
But some point more to a choice linked to the address book of the former Walker. Attacks swept aside this January 12 by this close friend of Emmanuel Macron, in the columns of La Tribune Dimanche.
“Some people think that I am stupid enough to only have the ability to have an address book. It is a contempt that, because we come from politics and move into the private, we wouldn’t be able to do anything else.”
The logical continuation of its consulting activities
Christophe Castaner rather sees this appointment as the logical continuation of his consulting activities, within his company created two years ago, Villanelle Conseil. The Shein company is regularly singled out for its polluting activities and for its non-respect of human rights. Christophe Castaner indicates that the fast-fashion company “understood that it was up to it, as an important player, to take virtuous initiatives”.
The company achieved a turnover of 1.64 billion euros in 2023 and displays a growth rate which should allow it to surpass all of its competitors soon.
