The 150 MW expansion was secured through an additional agreement to the long-term power purchase contract with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). This agreement guarantees revenues for the new megawatts added, ensuring the financial stability of the project for the next 25 years. Financing for this extension was completed with the support of the Japan Bank for International Corporation (JBIC) and other international financial institutions, demonstrating investors’ confidence in the viability of the project.

Contribution to Egypt’s energy mix

Red Sea Wind Energy’s wind farm plays a crucial role in Egypt’s energy strategy, which aims to produce 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. By reducing Egypt’s CO2 emissions of approximately 1.3 million tonnes per year, the park contributes significantly to the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Once fully operational, it will provide renewable electricity to more than a million homes.

Project progress and prospects

To date, 306 MW of capacity is already connected to the Egyptian national grid, with full commissioning planned for the third quarter of 2025. This milestone is being achieved ahead of the initial schedule, despite the increase in park capacity. This development reinforces ENGIE’s role as a leader in the renewable energy sector in Africa and the Middle East.

Statements from ENGIE managers

Paulo Almirante, ENGIE Senior Executive Vice President in charge of Renewable Energy and Energy Management, highlighted the company’s commitment to maintaining a level of operational excellence for the expansion of the park. He expressed confidence that, once completed, the Red Sea Wind Energy park will not only be one of the largest onshore wind installations in ENGIE’s portfolio but also a major pillar in the country’s ecological transition ambitions.
