Each start of the year brings its share of reforms and tariff modifications. In 2025, several measures and revaluations directly impact the daily spending of the French. Retirees, employees and all households will benefit or suffer.
Indeed, while some news may be pleasing, others herald a difficult new year. The purchasing power of the French risks looking gloomy. And if inflation slows down its crazy pace, consumers do not see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Retirements: great news to start the year
Basic retirement pensions benefit froma revaluation of 2.2% from January 2025, visible during the February payment. This measure concerns around 14 million retirees. This is obviously good news, especially since seniors expected a more modest increase.
This was without taking into account the censorship of Michel Barnier’s government. At the same time, be aware that the Solidarity Allowance for the Elderly (Aspa) benefits from the same increase. However, this is valuable assistance for the most modest 65-year-old retirees.

On the good news side, in 2025, caregivers will be able to benefit fromDaily caregiver allowance (AJPA) for a maximum cumulative duration of 264 days, compared to 66 previously, in the event of assistance to several people. This service aims to offer more support to caregivers in their journey.
Finally, tenants appreciate the tightening of the rules regarding thermal strainers. In fact, owners can no longer rent a property which displays a DPE of G. This is a key measure of the Climate and Resilience law.
Daily increases for the French
Certainly, retirees like tenants and caregivers can rejoice at some news. All of them, on the other hand, are not good for purchasing power. For example, the price of stamps increases.
In 2025, sending a letter costs even more: the green stamp now reaches €1.39, an increase of 7.8% in one year and 20% over two years. Other postal services, such as registered letters and Colissimo, also see their prices increase by 5 to 7% on average.
On the mutual and health insurance side, the news is not good either. Supplementary health insurance contributions increase by 6% on average. Individual contracts, often taken out by retirees or the self-employed, increased by 5.3%, while collective contracts saw increases of 6.8% to 7.3%.

Finally, the rules regarding meal vouchers are changing. Since January 2025, the use of meal vouchers for the purchase of products that are not directly consumable (such as pasta or rice) is no longer possible.
What about savings?
In France, many citizens, from students to retirees, save every month. Even if they don’t save a lot of money, they rely on interest to boost savings. Is 2025 a favorable year?
Not really. Indeed, for example, the rate of remuneration of new Housing Savings Plans (PEL) opened from January 2025 fall to 1.75%, compared to 2.25% previously. The Livret A, for its part, will fall in February from 3% to 2.5%.
This is bad news, especially since the price of gas is increasing at the same time. For January 2025, the average price including tax is increasing. In fact, it reaches 0.14648 €/kWh for cooking and hot water (+3.6%) and 0.11751 €/kWh for heating (+4.6%). Subscriptions remain stable.
These are therefore important changes that await the French in 2025. Changes that you need to know to organize yourself so that they weigh as little as possible on the budget.
