Algeria has unveiled an ambitious new initiative aimed at strengthening its position in the gold sector. The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkabrecently announced the identification of 93 new sites intended for artisanal gold prospecting in the southern regions of the country. This operation aims not only to stimulate national production, but also to fight against illegal exploitation of the precious metal.
With gold reserves estimated at 173.56 tonnes, Algeria ranks first on the African continent, according to the World Gold Council (WGC). Despite this wealth, the country’s gold production remains modest. Since the start of operation in 2001, the National Gold Mining Company (ENOR) produced less than 7 tonnes in two decades. This low productivity is explained by a lack of investments and suitable technologies for efficient exploitation of underground reserves, particularly in Hoggar regionsof Tamanrasset and d’In Guezza.
To make up for this delay, the Algerian government has implemented a strategy since 2021 aimed at promoting artisanal gold mining. This initiative includes granting operating permits to small local businesses. To date, 222 licences were allocated, making it possible to boost the local economy while reducing illegal gold trafficking.
Minister Arkab stressed that the identification of these 93 new prospecting sites is a key step in this new approach. The wilayas of Tamanrasset, In Guezzam and Tindouf will be subject to in-depth studies before the sites are offered to micro-enterprises for artisanal exploitation.
This initiative is crucial for the future of the Algerian mining sector. In addition to boosting national gold production, it has the potential to create jobs and promote economic development in the regions concerned.
