The Great Wall of China owes its longevity to a very particular material!

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, the Great Wall of China is now one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions. Every year, millions of visitors walk its ramparts, explore its watchtowers and soak up its millennia-old history. Sections such as Badaling and Mutianyu, near Beijing, are particularly popular, offering spectacular views.

A 1990 report estimated the total length of the walls at 6,259.6 km. In April 2009, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage revised this measurement and declared a total length of approximately 21,196 kilometers. This measurement includes the main walls, trenches, currently destroyed parts, and natural barriers such as hills and rivers that have been incorporated into the defensive system.

The height and width of the Great Wall of China vary considerably depending on the section and the period of construction. The average height of the Great Wall is 6 to 7 meters. However, some sections can reach up to 14 meters in height. The average width is 4 to 5 meters at its base and about 3 meters at the top. The paths at the top were wide enough to allow soldiers and horses to pass. These dimensions were designed to make the wall difficult to climb and cross, while allowing easy transport of troops and equipment along its crest. (…)
