Storm Boris hits Central Europe: at least six dead

The human toll rose on Sunday, September 15, with the death of a person drowned in Poland and a firefighter in Austria, adding to the four deaths already recorded in Romania on Saturday. Four people are also missing in the Czech Republic.

In Poland, the situation is particularly critical in the southwest of the country. The town of Glucholazy, on the Polish-Czech border, has seen its city center submerged by the flooded Biala Glucholaska River. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who is visiting the region, said that further evacuations are likely. He also announced the deployment of Starlink satellites (owned by Elon Musk) to restore communications in isolated areas.

260,000 homes in the Czech Republic without electricity

In the Czech Republic, the northeastern town of Opava had to be partially evacuated after the river of the same name overflowed. Authorities report that 260,000 homes are without power.

Romania is facing an alarming situation in the Galati region, in the southeast of the country. The Interior Ministry reports that “more than 5,000 households and more than 15,000 people” are affected in Galati and Vaslui counties.
