Faced with its dependence on five American and Chinese digital giants – Amazon, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Alibaba – the Swiss state decides to equip itself with a sovereign cloud in order to host its data. from 2026.
The cost of developing this sovereign hybrid multicloud infrastructure is estimated at 320 million Swiss francs, or 431 million euros. The country has already allocated an initial credit of 250 million Swiss francs for the establishment of its Swiss Government Cloud (SGC). Only the Confederation, cantons, towns and municipalities will have access to it. No services will be provided to the private sector via this infrastructure.
According to Matthias Stürmer, professor at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), interviewed by the RTS channel, the cost of such a transition is not an obstacle: “The public sector already spends billions on digital anyway”. Ultimately, Switzerland plans to save nearly 24 million Swiss francs per year through this system for protecting its population’s data.
