Alfieri and Ettore were hired in 1922 by the Diatto firm to create a first racing car: the Tipo 20. Unlucky in the Grand Prix, the Diatto was nevertheless a fast and reliable car. She showed this by achieving her first major success, in an endurance race during the 24 Hours of Monza in 1924.
In 1926, the two brothers decided to build their own racing cars; actual date of launch of their automobile brand. The first Maserati was developed on the basis of the Diatto and took the name Tipo 26. It quickly became the formidable rival of the Bugattis, and won the Targa Florio event the same year.
Alfieri died in 1932. With his death, the firm lost its engineer and especially its manager. The three Bindo brothers, Ernesto and Ettore, continue the business. Bindo takes over the general management, Ernesto the technical direction and Ettore has financial responsibility. It will prove to be the weak link in the organization which, despite sporting and commercial successes, will experience significant cash flow difficulties.
The sale of Maserati to the Orsi family
In 1937, the Maserati brothers sold their shares in the company to Adolfo Orsi, a large industrialist from the Modena region who had a passion for automobile racing. This takeover marks the start of a new era in which the company continues to grow, including moving to Modena, where Maserati’s heritage continues to this day.
-Until 1946, Maserati focused exclusively on the construction of racing cars. In the years that followed, the brand continued to shine on the circuits, culminating in the 250F, the Formula 1 car with which Juan Manuel Fangio won his world title in 1957.
Maserati then turned its attention to designing stylish road cars. The introduction of the A6 1500 opens a new chapter, combining performance, refinement and beauty. Models such as the 3500 GT, Mistral, Ghibli, Merak and Khamsin embody Maserati’s commitment to the ultimate “Gran Turismo” lifestyle. All these icons are presented during this temporary exhibition on thematic islands, which immerse visitors in a journey through time and highlight the rich heritage of Maserati.
