There is “between 10 and 20% chance” that this innovation “will lead humanity to extinction”: one of the fathers of artificial intelligence, Geoffrey Hinton, pessimistic about its future

“Faced with AI, we are three-year-old children”he declared, estimating that it could surpass man in the years to come.

Considered one of the fathers of artificial intelligence, Geoffrey Hinton considers this innovation dangerous, which could lead to the extinction of humanity within thirty years, according to his recent statements.

For British-Canadian researcher Geoffroy Hinton, “there is between 10 and 20% chance” that artificial intelligence (AI) is leading humanity to extinction “in the next thirty years”, he declared, pessimistic, in an interview given to the BBC last December 28.

Last October, the researcher had already sounded the alarm. “If AI is not heavily regulated, it will lead to the extinction of humanity within the next thirty years”he wrote on the social network X. Today, he estimates this risk at 20%, reflecting his growing concern.

L’IA “much smarter than us”

This innovation, of which he is the originator and which he considers dangerous, is “much smarter than us”he continued. Its power could “escape from the hands of its creators”he added. “We’ve never had to deal with things smarter than us before. And how many examples do you have of a smarter thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing? […] I imagine it like this: imagine yourself with a three-year-old child. Faced with AI, we would be three-year-old children.”

Non-regulation of big companies

A scenario made all the more likely in the absence of international regulations limiting the capabilities of AI. “Mixing the development of AI with the lucrative objectives of large companies will not guarantee safe developmenthe fears. The only thing that can force these companies to do more safety research is government regulation.”he insisted.

Because, apart from the AI Act specific to Europe, no major text seems to be able to slow down the race for innovation, and the strong progression of AI which continues to develop.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2024

Described as one of the fathers of artificial intelligence and 2024 Nobel Prize in PhysicsGeoffrey Hinton est at the origin of neural networkswhose work he published in 1986. A first step for designing AI models as we know them today.
Spectator of the meteoric progression of AI, ileft his position at Google in May 2023considering the emergence of certain chatbots as “scary”. Since his departure, he campaigns for much stricter regulation of AIlike Yoshua Bengio, another father of artificial intelligence just as critical of the current uses of his invention.

A summit scheduled for February 2025

Researchers rely on the Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence to be held on February 10 and 11, 2025 in to discuss the future and deployment of AI “in the general interest and respect for the common good”. Many heads of state are expected there.
