The day after Christmas, resale sites record, as every year, hundreds of thousands of advertisements corresponding to unwanted gifts, the opportunity to treat yourself by repurchasing a product unlike last year when it was about to make ends meet, according to Ebay.

The resale platform recorded 340,000 ads of this type in on Wednesday morning, more than last year at the same time (300,000) according to a press release.

“In total, nearly 600,000 ads should be put online by private sellers between December 25 and 26 and 3 million by January 3, 2025,” estimates Ebay.

“While in 2023, inflation pushed for more pragmatic choices, this year, individuals are more likely to favor exchanging a gift that does not suit them for an object that makes them happy,” underlines Ebay.

Among the most resold items, tech products, video games and toys come out on top, as observed by the competing platform Rakuten.

Rakuten France recorded 339,000 new ads posted by private sellers on its platform on Wednesday morning.

“In 2023, the resale of gifts allowed each reseller to recover 100 euros on average, a figure which should be reached or exceeded again this year,” underlines the site in its press release.

Citing a study commissioned from Ipsos in October, the platform indicates that 4 out of 10 French people would be ready to resell a gift this year.
