Congo Telecom enters the mobile telephony market

(Ecofin Agency) – The telecommunications sector in Congo is taking a crucial step with the expansion of services available to consumers. This new dynamic reflects national ambitions for modernization and digital inclusion.

The Congolese Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy, Léon Juste Ibombo (photo, left), announced on Monday December 23 the official launch of Congo Telecom's mobile telephone network. Call tests with MTN Congo and Airtel Congo were successful, marking the start of a new era for connectivity in the country.

This initiative should allow Congo Telecom to diversify its activities and sources of income. By adding mobile telephony to its portfolio, the operator positions itself as a player capable of meeting the growing needs for connectivity and digital innovation. Since its creation in 2003, the company has consolidated its presence in the fixed telephony and fiber optic sectors. This diversification is a strategic step to expand its footprint in the national market.

The initiative is part of Congo Telecom's ambition to become, by 2030, the leading digital operator in the Republic of Congo and a major player in Central Africa. To achieve this objective, the company has implemented a four-year strategic plan, “Transform”, based on eight pillars: offers, customer experience, brand image, cost optimization, culture of business, human capital, technologies and networks, as well as the ecosystem and partnerships.

The arrival of Congo Telecom on the mobile telephony market could shake up the telecommunications landscape in Congo. Currently dominated by a duopoly formed by MTN and Airtel, this sector could benefit from increased competition, thereby stimulating innovation and improved services for consumers. According to the Postal and Electronic Communications Regulatory Agency (ARPCE), MTN controlled 60% market share in October 2023, compared to 40% for Airtel. The entry of Congo Telecom could redistribute the cards and offer new opportunities to users and the Congolese digital economy.
