New EPV expansion successfully completed

The terminal now reaches a total annual capacity of 5.2 million TEUs with a provision of two kilometers of quay. This project, carried out over three years, was delivered on time.

“Almost a year ago, we commissioned the second phase of our expansion. This month we added 1 million TEUs to our capacity in Tangier, preparing us to meet the needs of Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd when the new network is gradually operational from February 2025.said Keld Pedersen, general manager of APM Terminals Ouest Méd.

The two terminals operated by APM Terminals in Morocco play a key role as hub ports, forming the central pillar of “Gemini Cooperation”, an operational collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd on east-west trade routes.

These developments in Tangier also mean that the terminal has welcomed 500 new employees over the years 2023 and 2024. “Our greatest asset is our diverse, engaged and dedicated workforce. They are some of the best problem solvers in the industry and constantly strive to provide the best possible product for our customers,” added Keld Pedersen.

This new step in the expansion of Tanger Med Port consolidates its position among the most technologically advanced, efficient and secure container terminals in the world. It incorporates innovations such as an automatic mooring system for ship berthing, digital berth planning, and the specially designed Gemini simulation tool. This year, the World Bank and S&P Global ranked the port of Tangier as the fourth most efficient container terminal in the world.

“Expansion is not just about increasing capacity. It introduces advanced technologies that reduce port times, optimize crane productivity, and reduce direct ship emissions through shore power provided by the port authority. This fits not only with our overall strategy, but also with our commitment to our customers, local communities, and our employees, maximizing the positive impact of the terminal”underlined the manager.
