An astronomical sum. During his more than 50-year career in politics, Michel Barnier has accumulated positions at the heart of the French state, but also at the European Parliament in Brussels. He will therefore receive, once his term as Prime Minister is over, a pension of 28,270 euros gross per month, Marianne revealed on Friday, September 13.
The magazine, which calculated the amount, first relied on his 17 years as a parliamentarian, and his 7 years as a minister, or nearly 25 years of contributions. For these functions, he will receive 7,637 euros gross, as well as 5,300 euros gross for his time at the Palais Royal, for which he receives 75% of his salary at the end of his career. The tenant of Matignon also accumulated compensation during his 26 years spent at the General Council of Savoie.
Michel Barnier, who was also European Commissioner for more than nine years and chief Brexit negotiator for five years, will receive the bulk of his pension, €15,083 gross, from the European Union. The announcement of the total amount of his pension, €28,270, has caused a wide reaction. On X, some regretted that this sum, “exaggerated”, was not “capped”. “It’s a shame”, also wrote one Internet user.
The Prime Minister’s entourage, however, clarified that “on his own initiative”, “his retirement pension as European Commissioner” had been suspended, while his pensions from the Senate and the National Assembly were suspended “automatically”. Michel (…)
