Besides Quebecers, it is our neighbors to the South who visit and spend the most in the capital. In 2023, approximately 516,000 Americans had set foot in Quebec to spend $603 million.
And they increased their spending by 19% this year, according to Destination Québec cited (DQc), totaling around 717 million. However, we do not yet know the volume of visitors for 2024.
The increase in purchases by tourists from the United States is partly responsible for the 10% increase in tourism spending, compared to 2023. This is excellent news for the general director of DQc, Robert Mercure.
“That means more tourists and tourists who are more generous in their activities. Succeeding in growth while inflation is hurting everyone and the remnants of the pandemic are still being felt, it is a sign that Quebec knows how to position itself and offer an experience that stands out in the eyes of travelers,” a- he mentioned in a press release on Sunday.
Of the $2.4 billion in tourism spending, 44% is attributable to Quebecers, 28% to Americans, 16% to overseas visitors and 12% to tourists from the rest of Canada.
Quebec should attract a good number of visitors in the coming weeks, since the city has charmed the American media CNN Travel et Vogueranking in their list of the best destinations in the world for the holiday season.
The travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler also considers the capital one of the 19 best cities in the world to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.
The people of Quebec also look favorably on visitors, at least that's what a DQc survey reveals. Nearly 82% of respondents believe that tourism contributes positively to the quality of life of citizens and 83% of them believe that cohabitation with tourists is easy.
“With the support demonstrated by this survey, we can think that we are succeeding in finding a balance that suits residents, but about which we must remain constantly concerned,” concluded Robert Mercure.
