Mercedes hits hard with the new CLA

Electric car news

Mercedes-Benz's electric transition takes a decisive turn with the upcoming arrival of the new CLA. This compact sedan is not just a successor to the EQ models – it embodies a technological revolution inherited directly from the EQXX prototype, a true innovation laboratory for the star brand.

The technical heritage of the EQXX prototype

The EQXX concept left its mark with a record autonomy of 1200 kilometers on a single charge, including 1000 kilometers in the extreme conditions of the Saudi desert. This feat is based on exceptional energy efficiency of 13,7 kWh/100kmalmost double the best current electric cars.

Timo Stegmaier, head of compact powertrain development at Mercedes, reveals that the new CLA benefits directly from these advances. The “one box” system integrates the battery, thermal management and power electronics into a single unit, optimizing space and simplifying production.

Energy efficiency without compromise

The new electric CLA has an NCM battery of 85 kWh with energy density 20% higher to previous cells. The propulsion system adopts an innovative architecture:

  • Permanently excited front motor with decoupling system
  • Rear engine coupled to a two-speed gearbox to maximize efficiency
  • Energy recovery capacity reaching 200 kW when braking

These innovations make it possible to achieve record consumption of 19,2 kWh/100km and an overall return of 93%even surpassing the Lucid Air Pure.

Ultra-fast charging and advanced features

The 800V architecture allows impressive charging performance: 300 kilometers of autonomy in 10 minutes on a 320 kW DC terminal. The CLA adopts the Tesla-type NACS socket for fast charging, supplemented by a J1772 connector for slow charging.

Mercedes also integrates bi-directional charging, allowing the battery to be used as a mobile energy source. The new MB.OS operating system optimizes overall management, particularly motor control in difficult conditions thanks to lessons learned from the EQXX.

A dual strategy with hybrid version

The MMA platform will also accommodate a 48V hybrid version of the CLA, offering customers the choice of engine. The aesthetic differences between the versions will be minimal, mainly at the grille level, preserving the aerodynamic design inherited from the EQXX while prioritizing daily practicality.

This pragmatic approach reflects Mercedes-Benz's vision: to offer high-performance electrified solutions that meet the varied needs of customers, without sacrificing energy efficiency or the brand's characteristic refinement.
