Hybrid and four-wheel drive for the raised Subaru Outback station wagon

In , the choice is limited in the Subaru catalog, there is only one model on sale! This is the Subaru Solterra, a large electric SUV which is a clone of the Toyota bZ4X. What could be more normal since Toyota is a shareholder of Subaru and qThere are numerous industrial agreements between these two brands. One of these concerns a hybrid system responsible for integrating the engine compartment of future Subaru vehicles.

More for Subaru there is no question of adapting, as is, a full hybrid engine from Toyota. The Japanese brand is keen to retain one of its main originalities: its Boxer engine (flat engine). This is why Subaru's new “full hybrid” engine combines a 2.5-liter, 158 hp flat four-cylinder unit with hybrid technology (of Toyota origin).

We do not yet know if the Subaru Outback will return to our region but with the full hybrid engine (known to be less polluting) could allow it to re-enter the French market

Toyota hybridization but with Subaru “sauce”

This engine will arrive on the new Subaru Forester sold in North America, but also on the new Subaru Crosstreck. Normally this model should be equipped with a CVT gearbox (like Toyota models) but it Subaru could have moved towards a “transaxle solution” to avoid the continuously variable transmission which is a little too present when accelerating.

Subaru doesn't want to lose its soul by using the Toyota hybrid system. This is why Subaru remains faithful to the boxer engine and mechanical all-wheel drive.

Four-wheel drive or nothing

Even if the technical sheet is still kept secret, oApart from the boxer engine, we know that Subaru's all-terrain models will not do without all-wheel drive, which is also Subaru's trademark. No electric motor on the rear axle but a simple transmission shaft connected to a compact differential which will drive the rear wheels.

Compared to the current generation of Subaru Outback sold in other European countries but not in France, the new Outback displays a more SUV treatment. This model will be unveiled next year for marketing in 2026 in North America.
