Mercedes-Benz's latest invention: 60 km of free range thanks to the sun

Mercedes-Benz is tackling one of the biggest challenges for electric vehicles: range. With its technology Solar Coatingthe German manufacturer innovates by transforming the bodywork of electric cars into a solar energy generator.

This innovation is based on a thin photovoltaic layer, with a thickness of only 5 micrometersintegrated under a special paint allowing 84% of light to pass through. Thanks to this technology, the surface of the vehicle can capture solar energy and convert it into electricity, which can be used directly to recharge the batteries.

In addition to its impressive lightness (50 grams per square meter), this solar paint stands out for its durability and respect for the environment. Unlike other systems, it contains no rare earths or toxic substances, thus guaranteeing production and recycling that is more respectful of the ecosystem.

Performance and potential of the technology

The first tests carried out by Mercedes-Benz in the Stuttgart region confirmed the potential of the Solar Coating. Under optimal conditions, this technology can provide up to 60 kilometers of additional range per day. This represents an ideal solution for drivers making urban or peri-urban journeys, thus covering their daily needs without having to go to a charging station.

With 223 hp and Toyota reliability, this plug-in crossover is now more economical than ever.

Furthermore, the solar paint is compatible with existing vehicles and could be applied on a large scale, depending on the results of the next phases of development. This concept paves the way for even smarter use of renewable energy in the automotive sector.

Environmental impact and practical benefits

Technology Solar Coating fits perfectly with Mercedes-Benz's strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its electric vehicles. By capturing solar energy, this innovation reduces dependence on traditional charging stations and, therefore, eases the pressure on charging infrastructure, which is often saturated in urban areas.

The addition of daily autonomy of 60 kilometers thanks to solar energy constitutes a significant advantage for urban and peri-urban journeys. This allows users to limit their energy consumption from the electricity grid, thereby contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions linked to electricity production.

Another strong point is the recyclability of this solar paint. By containing no rare earths or harmful chemicals, Solar Coating ensures an environmentally friendly life cycle, in line with the expectations of consumers concerned about sustainability.

Technology Solar Coating from Mercedes-Benz represents a major step forward in the quest for more sustainable and autonomous mobility. By exploiting an energy source as universal and renewable as the sun, the German manufacturer is redefining the concept of charging for electric vehicles. Although challenges remain, particularly in terms of costs and efficiency in real conditions, this innovation could mark the start of a new era in the automotive industry.
