here are the worst and best models for security in 2024

Euro NCAP, the European certification body for road safety, has finished its year 2024. It is therefore time to take stock, particularly in terms of electric cars. Who does well, who disappoints? The crash test results have given their verdict and the ranking includes some good and bad surprises.

In the category of electric vehicles, the one that interests us more particularly on 01net.com, it is the excellent Audi Q6 e-tron which displays the best safety record. The electric SUV based on the PPE platform, which we very much appreciated during its test, therefore provides additional reason for satisfaction since it obtains the best average score.

With 91% in protection for adults, 92% for children, 81% for pedestrians and cyclists and finally 80% for equipment, the flagship of the brand with the four rings is of rare homogeneity. Of course, with this type of performance, the Q6 e-tron obtains the famous 5 Euro NCAP stars.

He is not alone this year, since the majority of vehicles tested by the organization came away with the same overall score. It is the detail of the different protection scores which then makes it possible to distinguish the best students. Moreover, among the new electric cars that obtained the maximum score, we can cite among others the Mini Countryman, the Volvo EX30, the Porsche Macan, the Cupra Tavascan and the Ford Explorer and Capri, all of which we were able to try.

Chinese cars are at the level

Before tackling the dunces in this ranking, it is worth noting a strong trend. Usually at Euro NCAP, the lowest scores were reserved for Chinese brands which have shown in the past many difficulties in adapting their vehicles to European safety standards which are much more demanding than in Asia.

This is certainly no longer the case since almost all Chinese cars sold in Europe in 2024 have obtained 5 Euro NCAP stars. Thus, models like the Xpeng G6, the Zeekr 001, the Zeekr The myth of the unsafe Chinese car is therefore widely called into question, which is not necessarily good news for European manufacturers.

The worst electric cars for safety

At the bottom of this ranking, there are of course the worst students. The dunce of this 2024 vintage is none other than… the car of the year 2023, the Jeep Avenger. Indeed, the Car of the year jury makes its decisions well before the vehicles go through the crash test and, inevitably, there are sometimes some unpleasant surprises. The Avenger still gets a 3-star rating, with honorable protection scores for adults (79%) and children (70%). It is in terms of protection of the external environment (59%) and safety equipment (53%) that the problem lies.

The other disappointment in this ranking unfortunately comes from one of the darlings of the year, the 100% electric Renault 5 E-Tech (and its sporty version the Alpine A290). The results of the Euro NCAP tests also caused a stir when the electric R5 obtained its rating, a disappointing 4 stars. As with the Avenger, it is the equipment (68%) which penalizes the small French city car.
