Here are the best and worst passports for traveling

Canadians still hold one of the best passports in the world, even if it’s not quite at the top of the charts Passport Index 2024 from the Montreal firm Arton Capital.

Just like last year, the Canadian passport comes in 33rd place in terms of the number of countries where it allows you to travel easily, without having to obtain a visa.

With 174 possible destinations without any visa or special authorization, one more than in 2023, Canadians can notably boast of having overtaken their American neighbors, for whom the number of countries accessible without a visa has increased from 174 to 173 in during the last year.

With a Canadian passport, it is now possible to visit 117 countries without any visa, 50 by obtaining a visa once at your destination or by obtaining an electronic visa and 7 with an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). This leaves 24 countries where a citizen of Canada cannot go without first obtaining a proper visa.

Canada notably improved its situation in Egypt where a visa was required before departure, in 2023. From now on, it is possible to obtain one once there. Canadian travelers to Egypt also have the option of obtaining an electronic visa.

The process has also become simpler for residents of Canada wishing to travel to Türkiye, Rwanda, Malawi and Sri Lanka.

Prize list

With 180 easily possible destinations, i.e. 130 without any visa, 50 with an electronic visa or a visa obtained at the destination and only 18 countries where you must have a traditional visa, it is the United Arab Emirates passport which again this year wins the first place on the list.

Spain holds second position with 179 destinations not requiring a traditional visa.

All the rest of the top 20 is occupied by European countries. South Korea comes in 21st and Japan 25th

On the other hand, Syria appears at the bottom of this ranking, with only 40 destinations where it is possible to travel simply. Afghanistan (41), Iraq (46), Somalia (46) and Pakistan (47) round out the bottom of the list.
