The big brand test: smoked salmon from the big brand is respected, without being the most expensive (COMPARATIVE)

Aspect du packaging : we chose Labeyrie as our reference brand this year. The black packaging is really classy and really makes you think of the holidays. Lidl also offers black packaging which instills confidence. For Delhaize, it’s simplicity and highlighting the product above all else. The label is small but successful. For their part, Intermarché, Carrefour and Colruyt are banking on a blue reminiscent of the ocean. To choose, it was better at Colruyt.

Product appearance: at Colruyt, we found the nose to be very fine and well balanced, and the fish was neither too fatty nor too dry. The same goes for the big brand. At Delhaize, the nose was smokier, and the color of the salmon was lighter, the same at Aldi. For Carrefour, we especially regretted the very fatty side of the salmon. For Lidl, the salmon was a slightly different red salmon, which was quite tempting. At Intermarché, it was especially very smoky and very pale.

Nutritional value: Nutri-Score C for Delhaize and Colruyt, and D for Aldi, Carrefour and Intermarché. Lidl and Labeyrie do not display any.

Label readability: we were treated to some good surprises for this criterion. At Intermarché and Delhaize, it was perfect. Colruyt was a little less clear, because it was too small. Like Lidl, by the way, but that was still correct too. It was okay at Carrefour, the same for Aldi. Finally, the big brand fails, it was much too small.

Taste : It was written “light taste” on the Colruyt packaging, but we could be more complimentary and talk about a finer taste. It was a nice surprise, with a nice texture too, it melted in the mouth. It was also a match with Labeyrie, which had a little extra texture. For Delhaize, it tasted very smoky, but it took precedence over the taste of salmon, unfortunately. Same thing for Aldi and Lidl, by the way. The defects were the same, but worse, at Carrefour. Finally, there was a lack of finesse at Intermarché. The smoky taste stood out above all else.

Value for money: the big brand was not necessarily much more expensive than the competition, this should be emphasized. Here are the prices in order for 4 to 6 slices of smoked salmon: Aldi (€3.19), Intermarché (€4.28), Carrefour (€6.29), Delhaize (€6.49), Lidl ( €6.99), Labeyrie (€7.99), and Colruyt (€12.69).
