Lamborghini, which is famous for its luxury and performance cars, has announced that it is postponing the launch of its first electric vehicle, the Lanzador EV, until 2029. By thus postponing the model which was initially planned for 2028, the Italian brand joins other manufacturers such as Lotus, Bentley, Toyota, Ford, Ram and Buick, which have also postponed their electrification projects.
Why wait until 2029?
CEO Stephan Winkelmann justified the delay citing market uncertainty:
“We don’t think 2029 is late to launch an electric car. In our segment, the market will not be ready before 2025 or 2026.”
Lamborghini is also monitoring the review planned for 2026 regarding the 2035 ban on combustion engines imposed by the European Union. If these regulations were to be relaxed, it would not be excluded that Lamborghini abandons its electric vehicle project.

Synthetic fuels: a possible alternative
Despite this delay, Lamborghini is not ruling out alternatives to traditional thermal engines. Stephan Winkelmann was optimistic that synthetic fuels could offer a viable solution for the future. He said “synthetic fuels represent an opportunity for cars like ours. »
Other manufacturers like Porsche are already investing heavily in this technology. Porsche notably tested its synthetic fuels (eFuels) during a racing championship this year, in partnership with Mobil 1.
Ferrari is moving full throttle on electrics
While Lamborghini procrastinates, Ferrari is actively pursuing its electric vehicle project. The Italian brand has built a new factory dedicated to the production of electric vehicles. The first all-electric Ferrari model is expected to be unveiled in 2025 and marketed in 2026, with an estimated price around $550,000.
It remains to be seen whether Ferrari will maintain this schedule or follow Lamborghini’s example. For now, the prancing horse brand seems determined to get ahead of its competitors.
