Other companies may soon be affected and complaints may be filed in other countries, but “Apple is undoubtedly one of the most symbolic targets, due to its financial power and its unbridled communication on the theme “we are doing good for the planet””explains the council, while complaints indicate that the company's supply chain in this region is “contaminated”.
Apple, like most new technology giants, acknowledges that it sources strategic minerals needed to manufacture its smartphones, tablets and computers indirectly from the DRC and neighboring Rwanda. To do this, companies go through a chain of intermediaries: smelters, refineries, traders, trading posts, designated as the main responsible for the traceability of these minerals, in particular by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which brings together thirty-eight countries, mostly Western.
