The 2025 unemployment insurance reform will reduce the duration of compensation by 5 days for all job seekers. More details in the next lines of this new article.
A radical change in the method of calculating unemployment benefit
The expected reform of theunemployment insurance will lead to a modification of the calculation of compensation of the January 2025. This measure will lead to a reduction in payments for the majority of job seekers.
Ce change in the method of calculation unemployment benefits aims to “ administrative simplification of the compensation system ».
If the current system takes into account the real number of days in each month, the new system aims to move towards a standardization of the monthly calculation of allowances to avoid receiving variable amounts depending on whether it is a month of 31, 30, 29 or 28 days.
How much will you now lose with this change?
According to France Travail, the average gross amount ofunemployment compensation over a full time amounted to €1,436 gross in December 2023, or €47 gross per day.
With this reform of unemployment benefits, a job seeker who receives a daily allowance of €47 receives €1,457 for a month of 31 days.
This amount increases to only €1,316 during a 28-day month of February. The difference already amounts to €141 gross (i.e. €110 net).
In 2025, the compensation would have been around €17,155 over the year (47 x 365 days = €17,155) in the absence of the expected major change in the calculation method.
From now on, each month will be set to only 30 days, regardless of its actual duration.
The same beneficiary will therefore automatically receive €1,410 gross every month (€47 x 30 = €1,410).
He can take advantage of the system if he is compensated in February. On the other hand, this same person loses money “ if his compensation includes a month of 31 days.”
A significant shortfall
In the case of compensation over the full year, the loss of earnings is important.
In 2025, only €16,920 will be paid to this person receiving €47 per day (47 x 30 x 12 = €16,920), i.e. a “loss of €235 gross for this person” (or €180 net).
Unemployment reform: 5 days less compensation for everyone in 2025
Ce unemployed (and all other job seekers) loses “ 5 days of compensation in all cases » since ” 2025 has 365 days while the new calculation method only provides for 360 days per year (i.e. 30 x 12).”
Please note, 2028 being a leap year, one more day could be lost if the reform is still in force.
As explained on cfdt.fr, this monthly payment smoothed over 30 days hardly changes “nothing for people pursuing their rights » given that “ the 5 days neutralized per year (the 5 months to 31 days) are regularized at the end of the right. On the other handit is underlined, this will have an impact if for those who do not follow through on their rights ».
