Stanley Recalls Millions of Travel Mugs Due to Burn Hazard

Stanley is recalling millions of travel mugs, including more than 180,000 sold in Canada, due to a defect that may cause a burn hazard.

Health Canada explains that the Stanley brand “Switchback” and “Trigger Action” cups have a defective lid that may shrink when exposed to heat and rotation, which may cause the cup lids to come off unexpectedly during use.

The federal agency had received three reports of this type in Canada, including one from an injured person, as of Thursday.

Stanley says it has sold 2.6 million of these cups in the United States and that 16 people reported the lid came off, resulting in two cases of burns.

People who own one of the affected cups, sold between May 2016 and this month, should stop using the product and contact Stanley to obtain a free replacement lid, Health Canada said in a press release.

Stanley cups have been popularized on social media, but their most famous style, which features a handle and a straw, is not affected by the recall.
