A complaint has been filed and the police are examining the video surveillance of the parking lot. “What disgusts me,” says Jean-Louis Dimanche, “is that this guy takes advantage of the precariousness of others. Me first.” And less for the beneficiaries of the Food Bank.
“It disgusts me”
This is all the more damaging as the 2024 collection was a little less successful than that of 2023, which brought in 70 tonnes in the association's warehouses, 7% more than in 2022. The three days of 2024 allowed volunteers to collect sixty tonnes of food. “We are happy. This is as much as we will not have to buy,” says Jean-Louis Dimanche. But during the three days of collection, he “felt that it was very, very tense. There is the social context which means that people have less money. A couple of retirees who would have liked to give more and who can no longer make ends meet, who gave pasta.” There was also this lady “sorry at not being able to do like other years, because she takes care of her unemployed daughter”.
These difficult situations were especially felt in the city. “In the countryside, it’s pretty much the same. And the English always give a lot.”
The crisis was also reflected in the nature of donations. Basically packets of pasta. “Sometimes tomato sauce,” Jean-Louis Dimanche tries to joke. The tonnage attests to this. “In terms of quantity, we have perhaps as much as last year. » But ten tonnes less means more pasta and less canned goods. It's general. “Last year, we collected a pallet and a half of sugar cubes. This year, it's barely a quarter of a pallet. It's the same for chocolate, barely fifty bars and practically no coffee.
