a transparent and RGB Freebox Ultra Limited Edition

For its 25th anniversary, Free is playing the geek nostalgia card with a transparent Freebox Ultra reminiscent of PCs mounted with RGB.

Finally, no new box, but a limited edition. This collector's version features a transparent design that recalls the golden age of PC modding… an age that is still going strong.

Transparency is not the only advantage of this new generation box. Free adds a configurable LED strip which allows you to personalize the lighting ambiance according to six different modes.

Behind this attractive makeover, the technical characteristics remain unchanged. The Freebox Ultra maintains its peak performance with symmetrical speeds of 8 Gbit/s and WiFi 7, specifications which keep it at the top of the hierarchy of French internet boxes.

The service offering also remains identical, with an impressive bouquet including Canal+ en direct, Netflix, Disney+ (even if in a version with advertising), Amazon Prime and Universal+. A range of services which partly justifies the premium price of €49.99/month for the first year.

A marketing stunt

Beyond the well-orchestrated marketing stunt, we can legitimately question the relevance of a “showcase” box.

If the transparent appearance and the RGB backlighting are undeniably attractive for certain geeks, of which I am one, I must admit, they lose all their meaning once the box is installed in its final environment. This is more of a collector's item, for Free enthusiasts.

Many users prefer to hide their box behind furniture, or in a cabinet or cupboard. Even if this storage in a confined area is not recommended: it can affect Wi-Fi performance, and the box needs a little space to evacuate the heat generated.

A box that does not belong to its subscribers

What is strange here is that Freeboxes, just like other operator boxes, do not belong to the users, but they are rented/loaned… and must be returned at the end of the subscription in the event of termination or change of box.
