From winter 2027, the Louvain-la-Neuve campus will heat with wood

Last October, the municipality of Mont-Saint-Guibert withdrew its appeal to the Council of State against the planning permit for this power plant. In particular, she expressed fears about the smoke and dust that would be emitted by the installation. If there had been peace of mind at this level, the town also wanted to be able to benefit from the energy produced by this plant. His appeal served to maintain open dialogue with Veolia. Ultimately, no legal solution was found. Hence the withdrawal of the appeal so as not to block the project.

Controversy in Louvain-la-Neuve: “We do not understand why UCLouvain does not move to save this place”

This plant, which represents an investment of 80 million euros, will be powered by wood waste from Walloon recycling parks, including the 17 from InBW. This is type B wood, “from elements such as doors, frames, beams”, explains the university.

The plant will be connected to the university’s current district heating network via a pipeline of approximately two kilometers. Wood will therefore replace gas. The university specifies that “if heat production exceeds the use of UCLouvain, the excess will be marketed by GBES to companies located in the Louvain-la-Neuve science park, co-managed by UCLouvain and the InBW, as well as in the La Sablière economic activity park, currently being developed by InBW. As for the excess electricity, it will be injected into the network.

This project is part of the university’s transition strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.
