What everyone has been waiting for for the electric car is coming

Solid-state batteries are arriving: they will revolutionize the electric car, by lowering prices and offering more autonomy.

The world of electric automobiles is about to experience a real revolution: the groupe Cherywhich owns brands like Omoda, Jaecoo and Exeed, is preparing to begin mass production of solid batterieswhich will offer more autonomy at a lower price.

A revolution for the electric car?

Solid-state batteries offer 40% higher energy density to that of today’s lithium-ion batteries: in other words, this means that they will offer more autonomywill be lighter, and will offer better safety. And as manufacturers prepare to produce them on a large scale, this will contribute to lower the price of batteriesand therefore to further democratize electric cars among the general public.

Until now, major car manufacturers like Mercedes, Nissan and Volkswagen have worked on these alternative batteries, but had not yet reached the stage of mass production. This is now the case for the Chery group, and this news will have a positive impact on the automobile industry in general: Anhui Anwa New Energy Co.a subsidiary of the Chinese manufacturer, will in fact begin the production of solid batteries in its Wuhu factory, located in the Chinese province of Anhui, according to information relayed by CarNewsChina.

Solid batteries: the Chery group begins production

Chery announced an initial production capacity of 1 GWhand sets itself the objective of reaching a total capacity of 5 GWh. At the same time, the company worked to optimize battery production, with a 30% reduction in investment costs and a 20% reduction in the electricity consumption of its factory.

In terms of energy density, the brand’s first generation of solid-state batteries reaches the 280 Wh/kgwhich already offers an advantage over lithium-ion batteries, but a second generation will follow in 2025, and will allow energy density to exceed 400 Wh/kg. Finally, a third generation of these solid batteries is already planned for 2027, and will offer an energy density of around 500 Wh/kg. Enough to remain competitive in a market which already looks promising, and which should contribute to making electric cars more widely available to as many people as possible. Indeed, many manufacturers are already interested in solid-state batteries, and there is no doubt that the Chery group will help equip their vehicles.

If you are interested in purchasing an electric car, then it makes sense to wait a few more months, while solid-state batteries arrive on the market.
