What salary do you think is paid to Sam Altman, the controversial co-founder of ChatGPT? Whatever you imagine, it is very likely that you are far from the mark. Here is the amount he received in 2023.
The year 2023 was that of the explosion of artificial intelligence, and it is impossible to deny that OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, has given itself a very comfortable lead by taking all the competition by surprise. When this business took off, it was especially Sam Altman, one of its co-founders, who found himself in the spotlight. The one currently being sued by Elon Musk is now the head of OpenAI, ua billion-dollar company.
How much does an AI boss earn?
In 2023, OpenAI would have generated $3.4 billion, compared to $1.6 billion in 2022. Faced with such high sums, we have every right to think that Sam Altman has his pockets full of it. When we consider the six or even seven figure salaries of many tech bosses, this a priori seems legitimate. Except that according to information broadcast by the American media Bloomberg, this would be far from being the case.
Indeed, tax declaration documents retrieved by Bloomberg highlight salaries much lower than one might imagine: As CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman took home $73,546 in 2022 and $76,001 in 2023. This is far, far from being the highest paid employee in the company: in 2023, it is Ilya Sutskever, one of the other co-founders of OpenAI, who received the most money, at namely 322,201 dollars. The latter left the company in May 2024 to found his own start-up.
Just enough for health insurance
In 2023, Sam Altman simply declared that the amount received thanks to OpenAI was just enough for him to pay for health insurance worthy of the name. We almost want to pity this poor guy, who was almost ousted from the head of the company by its board of directors at the end of 2023.
But in reality, Sam Altman’s objective is clearly elsewhere. Because OpenAI is transforming, right now, into a for-profit company, and that will change everything about how it works. The company will be able to generate profits, and it should generate a lot of profits, which is currently valued at $157 billion.
It is rumored that Sam Altman could receive 7% of OpenAI’s capital sharesinformation which has not yet been confirmed. But if this were true, Altman would therefore recover $11 billion in stocks. And we must add to this the fact that he is already a billionaire: his fortune is currently estimated at just over $2 billion. Something to see coming…
