The emergence of Bluesky begins to interest Brussels

Since the election of Donald Trump to the White House and consequently the triumph of his first supporter Elon Musk, millions of users of X (formerly Twitter) have migrated to Bluesky. This social network is enjoying surprise success which has attracted the attention of the European regulator.

Bluesky has not yet reached the threshold of 45 million monthly active users in the European Union, synonymous with designation as a very large online platform — and therefore, subject to the Digital Services Regulation (DSA).

The social network has certainly experienced impressive growth since the American presidential election and Elon Musk's support for Donald Trump. X, formerly Twitter, became unlivable for millions of users who therefore migrated to the alternative. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission, recently opened her Bluesky account!

The success of Bluesky does not go unnoticed in Brussels

But nonetheless. DSA or not, all platforms operating in the European Union must follow basic rules, starting with a dedicated page on the website indicating the number of users and the country where they are domiciled. “ This is not the case for Bluesky », revealed a spokesperson for the Commission to Financial Times.

The regulator wrote to the 27 EU member states to see if they could find a “ trace the bluesky » somewhere. A priori, the responses were negative… There is no doubt that the company will be keen to respond to the EU's concerns and position itself as a counterpoint to X/Twitter which is being targeted by Brussels investigators.

Bluesky exceeded 20 million users a few days ago, rejoiced Jay Graber, the boss of the social network which was formed as a PBC (Public Benefit Company). This legal form combines lucrative objectives with a mission of general interest. The company is therefore committed to pursuing social or environmental objectives in addition to its financial objectives.
