2nd pillar in 2023: less pensions and more capital

Among the new beneficiaries of professional pension provision in 2023, 41% received exclusively a capital benefit, while 40% opted for an annuity. The remaining 19% preferred a combination of the two.

The number of beneficiaries of new pensions in occupational pensions continued to fall in 2023, while that of people preferring the payment of retirement capital continued to increase. For the first time, the two curves crossed.

Thus, among the new beneficiaries of occupational pension provision in 2023, 41% received exclusively a capital benefit, while 40% opted for an annuity, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) indicated on Monday. The remaining 19% preferred a combination of the two.

The median amount – one half received less, the other more – of a pension amounted, in 2023, to 1198 francs per month for women and 2058 francs for men. Regarding capital, the median amount of payments reached 76,365 francs for women and 190,000 francs for men.

The OFS explains the big differences between women and men by different professional paths. Women interrupt their professional activity more often and work more part-time. Salary differences also play a role.

The OFS specifies, concerning the inversion of the distribution between pension and capital, that the statistics of new pensions do not allow us to know whether these people have received in the past, or will receive in the future, other benefits from the 2nd pillar. The figures for 2023 therefore only provide a photographic image of the year considered.
